Guru Smt. Hema Iyengar

Guru Smt. Hema Iyengar is a passionate and dedicated exponent of Bharatanatyam who believes that dance is a powerful expression of the soul. For over 20 years, she has brought the vibrant tradition of Bharatanatyam to the Metrowest community in Massachusetts through her school, Nritya-Anjali School of Dance. Her mission has been to preserve and promote this ancient art form while nurturing the next generation of dancers with authenticity, discipline, and joy.

Hema’s journey began at the tender age of four and has been shaped by years of rigorous training under the guidance of the renowned dancer and composer Kalaimamani Sri Madurai R. Muralidharan. Her artistry reflects a deep commitment to tradition, combined with a creative and inclusive teaching style.

Since moving to the United States, Hema has trained and mentored hundreds of students, instilling in them not just technique but a love for the cultural richness and spiritual depth of Bharatanatyam. She brings together elements of the Vazhavoor, Kalakshetra, and Tanjore styles in her choreography and instruction, offering a distinctive blend that honors the past while embracing the present.

Beyond her role as a teacher, Hema is an active contributor to the broader cultural landscape. She supports and collaborates with numerous nonprofit organizations including Vision-Aid, IAGB, ISW, BigHelp, Ekal, FETNA, NEMA, KANE, MTS and several local temples and gurudwaras. Her performances and volunteer work have made a lasting impact on community celebrations and charitable events.

In addition to her artistic work, Hema has built a successful career in IT, exemplifying the balance between professional and creative excellence. Her unwavering dedication to Bharatanatyam, her students, and her community continues to inspire and uplift everyone around her.
